FAQ
Who can publish on Magnafora?
Anyone can publish on Magnafora. You'll need an email address or a crypto wallet, some good literary writing, and a few dollars to cover blockchain transaction fees.
What do you mean by "literary" here?
For the purposes of publishing on Magnafora, "literary" means: work that values the quality of expression at least as much as the content being expressed (which is to say: highly).
Many types of writing, in almost any genre, can satisfy this definition - but probably not things like a blog post about a weekend camping trip or an article written for a peer-reviewed scholarly journal. Both are valuable! But Magnafora probably isn't the best place for them.
How do I sign in to Magnafora?
Signing in is straightforward. Click on "sign in" and select your method: email or crypto wallet. If you select email, a blockchain address will be assigned to you and will serve as your identity when you connect to the site.
When you've signed in, you can add a picture and a bio to your profile on the site. Your profile page will also show the works you have published and collected.
Ok, how do I publish on Magnafora?
Once you have signed in to the site, navigate to the dashboard. On the dashboard you'll see an explanation of the terms "collection," "document," and "edition." These are important terms in the Magnafora ecosystem.
Collection: A collection is a simple container for your documents. Use it for a book, a collection, or even one standalone work. You can edit or add documents to an existing collection at any time. Creating a collection is the first step in the process of publishing on Magnafora.
Document:Next you will create a canonical document - your source of truth with authorship and version history. You control permissions. This is not yet the published document; that's created in the next step.
Edition: Editions are the published works people can collect and read. Think of these as equivalent to what would be sold on the shelf at your local bookstore - or published in your favorite magazine or journal. These are the final versions of your work, in other words, not drafts.
That said, if you later find errors or need to make revisions (or offer a translation), you can publish versions of editions. You determine the price of each edition and the number available.
Readers will need to collect (i.e. purchase) an edition in order to read it. Readers can later resell their collected edition (with automatic royalties to you) or transfer them to other wallets.
Throughout any of these processes authenticity and provenance remain publicly verifiable on the blockchain in perpetuity.
What is your content policy?
Users may not upload, publish, sell, or promote content that Magnafora determines, in its discretion, is unlawful, exploitative, abusive, threatening, harassing, or otherwise inconsistent with the platform's publishing standards.
For purposes of this policy, prohibited content includes: child sexual abuse material or sexualized content involving minors; credible threats or incitement of imminent violence; targeted harassment or doxxing; impersonation or deceptive attribution; and content that materially risks violating the rules of Magnafora's banking, hosting, marketplace, or infrastructure providers.
Can I publish AI generated content on Magnafora?
We can't know who wrote a given work or how it was written. If the work is good, readers will collect and read it. We ask that those who publish AI generated (or significantly assisted) work tag it as such.
How do I create a cover for my collection or edition?
We have a nice set of default covers that you can use. If you'd like, you can upload your own cover image during the collection or edition creation process. A ratio of 500x800 pixels tends to work best.
How do I read a piece of writing published on Magnafora?
Writing can be read after it has been purchased, or "collected." Once you've signed in (see above), discover new writing and authors on the "Explore" page or use the search function to find what you're looking for. You can then collect pieces of writing by purchasing them at the price the author has set.
Once you have collected a piece, you can read it; it will also appear in your library of collected works, and you can later resell the work on the secondary market (coming soon). Follow authors to receive updates when they publish new pieces.
What are the fees involved with using Magnafora?
You'll see an exact breakdown of fees when you go through the publishing or collecting flow. Magnafora takes a 10% fee on edition sales. Blockchain network or payment fees may also apply (these tend to be minimal). Writer royalties on eligible secondary sales default to 10%. Our fee policy may evolve over time.
What is a blockchain contract?
While you might be familiar with legal contracts in traditional publishing, Magnafora's blockchain contracts work differently. These are not customizable legal documents.
A "smart" contract is a piece of software that the blockchain executes to apply preset rules and permissions. Magnafora uses smart contracts to manage edition counts, sales, transfers, and royalty payments.
